Hyundai and BASF Showcase i-flow Concept in India

February 2, 2012: Hyundai Motor Corp and BASF have unveiled a concept car, called the ‘i-flow, in India on February 1, 2012. These two companies have jointly made this car with the aim to reduce as much of car weight as possible using new innovative materials. This doesnt mean they have used completely new material, but it could mean using of existing materials in new ways.

To achieve the objective of weight reduction, the companies have used many plastic components in place of metal counterparts. For instance, the use of polymers, recycled materials and thermoplastics for the seat frame has resulted in significant loss of weight. A polymer known as Elastollan are used to make most of the interior surfaces. The Elastollan provides an abrasion-proof material in the several forms of light to dark colours.

The engine is encapsulated in rigid foam, which insulates, protects and also retains engine heat in order to boost efficiency. The thermoelectric converters in the exhaust utilises the heat from the exhaust gases to generate power in auxiliary systems. The car also exhibited several other BASF technologies such as the mirror-finish paints, synthetic soft touch materials and many such technologies. With the help of these technologies, we can expect the carmaker to meet severe emissions norms without actually reworking on the vehicle
